This change has several disadvantages for me and I would really like to have the previous behaviour back. Also this "direct toggling of configured columns" is already directly available with a right mouse click on the columns header line.
The columns menu is too long to fit on the screen and has no scroll bar but scrolling arrows at both ends, that only shift one line and needs to be pressed for continuous scrolling. Furthermore it allows to only toggle a single column at a time and disappears afterwards.
Now the old "adjust visibility of columns" menu is not any more directly available because it is now located one menu level deeper. It allows comfortably scrolling the columns header list with a scroll bar and selecting or deselecting several columns at once.
In dark mode you can observe an additional phemonena with the scroll arrows at the ends of the 'customize columns'. When you open it with a right click on the column header in the file list these triagles appear black (active) or grey (inactive) on white background. Opening this menu using the main menu 'View' -> 'Columns' the background color of these triangles change to dark grey.
Perhaps this is a hint to find a solution for the dark mode problems with the arrows or tringles described in this topic
Yes, but I thought that this would allow users who don't know this to discover and use a convenient feature more directly. Not everyone has added so many columns to their File List that the menu would exceed the working area of the screen.
From what I observe, the previous feature to customize the columns via the dialog is still available, and always visible topmost, even when opening a very long menu. Scrolling is only necessary if you like to show/hide one of the columns directly (which you apparently don't want to).
I don't really see the problem, unfortunately. Even from a keyboard-centric usage perspective, it's still easily possible via Alt+V, C, Return. Am I missing something?
Thank you for your explanation @Florian.
I now have reduced my number of defined columns, although I still have more than the my display can show at once. (At least there are more than 100 tags or other attributes a column could be defined for.)
And in the meantime I also had found out, that the keybord shortcut had not vanished but just needs an additional Return to work further.
So please treat this request as done.
Thank you for all of your work and Happy Easter.
