Usually I use mp3tag to add cover art to my media. Today I used the newest version 3.29 and when saving the alterations, the files no longer play. Also the file information on 'Title', 'Artist' etc. disappeared in the windows explorer.
I wish v3.28 was still downloadable.
I would check first what is wrong with the files:
The files were fine when ripped to disk. Then using Mp3tag v.3.9 killed them. It is consistent, I have done this twice.
What hnders you to check the files straight after you have ripped them just to rule out that something has gone wrong there?
If you think you should blame MP3tag for inducing a problem then a lot more details are required:
Please follow the introductory section about the bug reports category:
The mp3diags site is almost repulsive, and the finally downloaded program does not even install. I am not sure if it would be able to check .flac files or only works on mp3's.
In any case, your latest development version 3.29b does behave the same way.
On another note I am not here to put a blame on you or your work. I am simply describing a problem which makes this program useless to me. If you want to get to the root cause of this, I will gladly provide anything you like.
This was the first usable fact. As you can see from the descriptions, the checking programs have their virtues for MP3 files.
If you want to supply more data, you could make the files available straight after ripping and a copy after you have tagged it.
As a test, you could also tag a copy of an old file which has successfully been tagged previously and see if that remains OK or is also broken.
What size do the covers have?
See e.g. here:
Apparently the image file size appears to have been the cause of this. While the original image files had a size of 10 to 13MB, reducing them to 1 to 2,5 MB resolved the issue. The image sizes that still worked for me were approximately 3000x3000px as JPG at 60% quality. For me this issue is resolved, but why this would make a music file unplayable would be a task for the developers.
That has also been explained already:
a file bigger than the maximum size breaks the file structure.
